Today's laboratories are designed to provide scientists with a functional,
flexible, and safe space, and contemporary laboratory furniture reflects
that need. There is such a wide variety of laboratory furniture
available that modern labs can be easily customized to suit their specific
needs.
Laboratory furniture consists of casework, countertops, fume hoods, and
varied accessories such as lighting, storage shelves, and racks.
Ideally, lab furniture should be functional, comfortable, and
aesthetically pleasing.
Casework is one of the
most important considerations to take into account when furnishing your
lab. What is casework? In a nutshell, casework refers to
built-in or modular cabinets, including base cabinets, wall cabinets,
and storage and supply cabinets. Depending upon the use of the lab,
casework can be made out of wood, metal, or laminate. Modular
casework has become very popular, as it allows the lab to be reconfigured
or redesigned if necessary.
Countertops are necessary as a work surface; they are available in
plastic laminate, stainless steel, and natural stone construction.
Heat and chemical resistant work surfaces are often made from epoxy or
phenolic resin materials.
Fume hoods
are necessary for safety in labs that produce chemical vapors or noxious
fumes, and also can prevent injury in case of fire or explosion.
Modern fume hoods are usually equipped with a mechanism that tells the
scientist it is working correctly.
Sinks, faucets, and service fittings complete the outfitting of the
modern lab. Depending on the laboratory's intended usage,
accessories such as mobile carts and seating, safety and test equipment,
and various racks and storage units, may also be required.
